Why Handicrafts? |
|
The AltaiCraft Company goal is to help to alleviate poverty in the Kazak villages of western Mongolia by employing women to use their unique skills to produce hand crafted items for sale throughout the world. The AltaiCraft Company is a women's cooperative that facilitates resource sharing and training, enabling them to do business with the "outside" world. AltaiCraft was started as a Women's Project under the auspices of the Women's Federation of Mongolia. In October 2006, the women voted to become their own financially self-sustaining company. |

The weaving, embroidery and felt produced by the women of Bayan Olgii are lost arts in Kazakstan, only to be found in museums and antique shops. By encouraging the women to learn traditional patterns and produce handicrafts, we can help ensure the survival of traditional art forms and help bring some economic stability to families in a very difficult corner of the world.
